Social Media Madness
Remember when there was AOL? That was all, just big ole’ AOL. I lived kind of close to their Ogden, UT office and as an emerging Internet geek, really wanted to work there. I wasn’t terribly fond of customer service, phones or anything related to the tasks I’d be doing. I just wanted to say I worked at AOL. A few years later I ended up doing telemarketing for the company you’d get stuck with after the AOL representative would say “how would YOU like to save $30 in gas?” and then quickly transfer you over. Good times…
But that’s all there was. Just the AOL. After MySpace blew up, Facebook quickly emerged and now we’re neck deep in Twitterisms that I can only pray will fade as quickly as they came onto the scene. Then you’ve got Tumblr, Twine, Digg, Technorati, Delicious, you know the rest. There are only HUNDREDS if not thousands of social media communities out there, and they’re all begging you to join them.
Which Social Media Communities Should I Join?
If you want to stick with the most popular, ride the Twitter wave until there’s nothing left. Twitter has been ridiculously hot and looks like it’s going to stay that way for quite awhile as Social Media Marketing takes over and businesses really begin to leverage the Twitter audience.
If you’re promoting your business through Social Media, it’s important not to over-do it. Getting your business profiles set up on all the good social media sites seems like a great idea, but it’s extremely time consuming and many of these communities don’t actually bring enough traffic to justify the work you would put into building your presence. Just stay on top of the trending social networking communities and be sure to have a presence ahead of your competition and you’re set!
