Process Consistency is Key

2009 November 29

Everyone has pretty much worn out the phrase “in these economic times” by now, but I’m going to take it for one last spin around the block. It looks like Wall Street is back in the black as they return to their perch atop America’s economic food chain, but jobs are still being lost at an astounding rate. People have been losing jobs left and right and it’s beginning to touch a little too close to home for many of us. Those of us who are lucky enough to still have our jobs are potentially doing the work of those we had to let go, and too often we are finding that the simple process of doing business is more difficult with less of a staff to divide the work.

Unfortunately, it’s not going to change. The best thing you can do as an employee trying to juggle a million tasks is to find ways to make those tasks more efficient and take less time. It can be tough to find the time to get some of these things accomplished when you have no time to devote to it, but trust me. Taking the time to make a more efficient ecommerce system will absolutely result in your being more productive.

Whatever kind of Ecommerce website you’re running, it’s important to have a consistent set of processes and procedures so that tasks are carried out in the same way every time. This may seem like kind of a rigid approach but you’ll be extremely happy for consistency when a potential problem with a customer order is resolved quickly due to a concrete way of doing things. Following are a couple of the most important processes any Ecommerce business should have:

  • Ecommerce Fraud Prevention is extremely important in terms of procedure because suspicious orders should undergo a rigorous testing before they may be processed. Lack of consistency in this Ecommerce fraud prevention steps can result in significantly lower defense quality.
  • Order Processing Procedures can change depending on the product being ordered, so it’s important to have a distinct process for processing a new order under any number of scenario’s. Simple how-to guides can make a big difference in productivity & understanding of the task at hand.
  • Shipping & Tracking is vital to keeping your customers informed of their order status and so it is extremely important to allow the customer to find out where their product is at any given moment. A procedure for gathering & giving access to tracking information can make the difference in the customer experience.
  • Return Processing is hopefully rarely necessary, but it’s good to have a consistent process in place to handle and document return transactions. Failure to do this consistently can make your Accounting department go crazy trying to connect the dots between transactions, and can be a bigger problem if your customer isn’t informed properly, or at all.

A procedure for anything is good so don’t stop at what’s listed above. If everyone in your office knows the steps to complete just about any task, then you are in a much better position to meet any demand.
